Exploring Vancouver’s Art Scene

There is no shortage of things to do in Vancouver during the summer season, whether it’s during the day or at night. Every week you are guaranteed to come across some sort of event, whether it’s a concert, pop-up shop, art exhibition or gallery opening. This past Friday, I did a bit of exploring in Chinatown and attended a one-night art exhibition held at the Fortune Special Project Space inside Fortune Sound Club called Disembodied. Disembodied is the project of Mexican born designer, Ricky Sosa of Canadian-based Revolucionario Design Co. The pieces in the exhibition are based on mythology and ancient traditions of the Wixáritari community in Mexico (Revolucionario.ca).  If you didn’t get a chance to see the show, you can view some of the colourful and intricate pieces on the Revolucionario Design Co. website here.

The space is quite small and with only two exhibitions, the first of which was displayed on the building’s facade ( you might have noticed random red and black spray painted words and phrases while passing along on Nelson Street) an installation by Mexican artist Stefan Bruggemann named “Headlines and Last Lines in the Movies.” The exhibition is very eye catching and at first glance looks like a construction site. But it’s worth the look for curious passersby. The idea behind Richardson’s project was to prompt us to question our relationship to the natural world. I found it rather peaceful to sit in the viewing rooms after a day of work and just sit and enjoy the calmness.
