Murality – About Our Founder

Amalia Liapis, the founder of Murality, has frequented Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES)  many years, keeping a close eye on its highs and lows, and although it is one of the city’s neglected areas, she sees it’s potential.

Amalia cares deeply about making changes that will enhance the life of people living here enrich the neighbourhood, and while some invest in building projects and other exciting ventures that will undoubtedly help to revitalize the area, it is also in need of other and more creative initiatives.

Having access to one of DTES’ heritage buildings with a very visible and very unexciting grey wall that needs a splash of colour; Amalia recently came up with the idea of Murality when visiting Mexico City. As you probably know, Mexico City is huge and certain parts of it have been neglected in a similar fashion to that of the DTES, but even the most derelict areas of this massive city are vibrant and full of colour, due to the Murals that decorate the walls there.

Touched by the beauty of the Mexican art scene, Amalia decided there was no reason why Vancouver can’t do the same thing – even if Murals are a very Latin American art form – and so she started doing some research and discovered that the resourceful and creative citizens of Mexico City would love to take part of a project that will add colour to Vancouver.
